Eastern Market Named Top 10 Neighborhood

5 10 2007

Tell us something we don’t know… The American Planning Association has named the Eastern market one of the great neighborhoods in America. Chosen because of the neighborhoods ability to ”balance the demands of growth and change, while preserving the fundamental values of the community” over the years. There are many local neighborhoods in the area that deserve recognition but it’s nice to see an area that has shown such resilience recognized.

It is particularly heartening to see that the neighborhood’s economic revitalization effort was recognized. The Barracks Row Main Street program that seeks to restore small businesses and make the neighborhood more self-supporting runs from Pennsylvania Avenue south to the Navy Yard. The program has had tremendous success and as a result has emerged as a prime shopping and dining destination that benefits the entire area.
