Science Foundation Building as Art
13 11 2007We think this is the Science Foundation Building Downtown. On it, we spotted this very interesting Gyroscope type sculpture feature on the building. As far as we could tell it does not move. Anyone know anything more? Hate to be the guy who has the office window right behind it!

This is the Keck Center of the National Academies, which houses much of the staff of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council. I think the gyroscope is referred to as an armillary and it does move (at least it’s supposed to). I think there’s a small motor but the wind also makes it spin. One side is supposed to be reminiscent of the cell, the other side of the sky.
And, yes, the office behind it has an obstructed view.
Well at least we got the science part right, the National Science Foundation headquarters is located in Ballston.
We are going to have to swing by at night, bet the thing looks really cool all lit up and spinning!
