Debauchery in Downtown DC

31 12 2007

Back in 1895, DC residents apparently had a much wider selection of places to drink and “socialize” downtown. This map highlighted the 50 saloons and 109 purported brothels, or bawdy houses, in what was known as the “Hooker’s Division” of DC at the turn of the last Century. There were also 61 places within these few blocks where liquor could be purchased.

Can you imagine what New Years was like in that area back in the day?  Just about the only place you can go these days to get that high a concentration of debauchery is Adams Morgan, minus the Bawdy houses of course! Have a great New Years, see you in 2008!

There still was actually a little bit of that old era around the White House up untill the 1980s when they finally closed down most of the “Bawdy” houses.
