DC’s A Model City

10 01 2008

We have been known to periodically mention  government planing programs throughout the area that have caught our eye or are a nice benefit to our fine city.

These programs often create lasting and substantial change. However unfortunately for evey urban planning project that has had success, there is at least one in the past that has failed.

The Model Cities Program, falls into the later group. The program was an element of President Johnson’s Great Society and War on Poverty in 1966. It was an ambitious federal urban aid program that ultimately never was able to met the goals established and was eventually ended in 1974.

Prolific flickr user rockcreek captured this photo of one of the last remaining signs from the long abandoned program on the side of the Kingman Boys and Girls club in NW.

So this raises a question, what Federal programs being implemented by our government do you all think are destined to follow the same fate as the Model Cities Program?

Well the No child left behind program is one that is going to fall by the way side in failure.

HUD is also a department that is litered with failed housing projects and renewal plans!
