Kennedy Center Accessible?
28 01 2008
We have been known to complain about how inaccessible the Kennedy Center is and how the center is so disconnected from the surrounding area. Well finally the collective wisdom of area planners have asked for a submission of concept to change all that, and the folks at Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn have responded with some phenomenal ideas!
As you can see EE&Ks plan connects the Kennedy Center to the waterfront and to the surrounding city, including the adjacent Foggy Bottom neighborhood and the National Mall. We especially like the outdoor amphitheater and what they call the grand allée between the center and the Lincoln Memorial. We just hope these ideas see some form of reality!

Is this the same proposal from a few years ago–perhaps pre-9/11? I can’t recall when I first read about a redevelopment plan for the area around the KC–that was scrapped due to costs/funding?
same thoughts here. there was a big hubub about this some years ago, but it just sort of fizzled out.
is it a great idea though? ab.so.lute.ly.
The plan was killed a few years ago by Congressional Republicans who cut the funding for the project. More here:

This one is more ambitious, attempting to deck over the whole Potomac River Freeway instead of just the part in front of the Kennedy Center.
Pshh.. I can’t imagine with the current economy in “uncertain” mode that they’ll be much support for this right now. Although I think we can all agree that it would be awesome.
Talk about ess-pensive…doh!
This new plan would be great, though look at the way 66 is rerouted… it doesn’t look like cars would be able to get directly onto constitution ave, which would never fly!
