Sidewalks Open for Business

Sick of all those sidewalk closures from construction sites throughout the city? We are too, and we’ve been complaining about them for a while now.
Well it looks like someone has finaly been listening and the city is taking some action. According to city officials, sidewalk closings at construction sites will no longer be allowed under new guidelines for pedestrian safety!
Construction sites in the District will now be required to provide covered walkways or protected open walkways instead of forcing pedestrians to cross the street.
In a statement released by Fenty’s office the Mayor said that ”The District of Columbia will join other cities, such as New York and Cincinnati, in requiring alternatives to closed sidewalks.”
Do you hear that? We’re finally catching up to Cincinnati!

This is great news! I have been down streets where both sidewalks are closed and I had to go down to the next block or be faced with walking down the middle of the street.
I have always been suprised to see entire sides of the street shutdown in DC for months at a time.
Having lived in numerous other cities, including Cincy (it’s not so bad), I alway assumed that construction sites were not allowed to just close down a sidewalk for more than a few hours, happy DC is catching up!
Hallelujah! I could never understand this? It is long over due!
Now onto the double parking issue…it’s always something.
