Holland Development Wants to Bring on the Jazz!
24 03 2008
After putting out a request for proposal on the Fifth and Eye Street lot in Mount Vernon Triangle, the District received seven submissions at the deadline last week from some of the areas top developers.
The District received proposals from Buccini/Pollin Group; Clark Realty Capital (which recently won the Poplar Point bid); Donohoe Development Co and Holland Development Group; JBG Cos.; MVT Associates, LLC; NDC-Jarvis; and Potomac Investment Properties, Inc. The various proposals for the site include proposals for everything from boutique and high-end hotels, restaurants, and fitness clubs, to cafes and coffee shops.
The one proposal that interested us the most was the one from Holland Development Group. The plan calls for a London based Jazz club and a hotel by Sol Melia. The Boisdale Jazz club is a group with several successful clubs in the UK and would fit right into the neighborhood. Interesting though is the choice of a hotel chain which mostly has experience running tropical properties.
The DC Planning and Economic Development office is planning to have each proposal presented to the community within the next two months. We will keep you posted. [FlickrPhoto: Everyskyline]

Sol Melia is a crappy mainstream hotel. We need hip, boutique.. send the tourists wearing socks with their sandals to the hampton in already!
Jazz sounds nice though…
sorry, but i have to differ with galmeida on this one.
yes, we need chic boutique hotels in that area (let alone DC at large), but it’s still a step up from a marriott, or one of the other myriad of crappy chain hotels that infest the district.
the hotels that solmelia runs in brasil aren’t so bad. if they could bring a bit of ‘international’ flare to dc, i’m all for it. especially in an area that is still plagued by gang shootings, drugs, and prostitution.
there is no way in hell that a ’boutique hotel’ is going to take a risk in that area, in this economy. although, given time, it’ll blossom.
i’ll take a sol melia over pretty much any marriott, hyatt, etc.
it’s a fair compromise for now.
geez poo poo, you’re making the triangle sound like southeast. I’ve lived a block away from the site for a little less than two years and crime has never been an issue… Once City Vista, 450 Mass, the Dumont etc come online I suspect that the “violent” crime in the neighborhood will be a thing of the past. And why wouldn’t a boutique hotel take the risk of opening up shop there… so many high end restaurants already exist within a 10 block radius, not to mention the six figure salary that most people living in the neighborhood have. Most, but most definitely not me!
They were saying a “Me by Melia” [sp?] - apparently a four star urban boutique hotel that’s in Madrid & goes for a beautiful people demograhic….
