1 Hotel Almost Here
31 03 2008The 1 Hotel by Starwood Capital and Perseus Realty is the big glass boutique hotel currently going up in the West End across from DC Ritz. We absolutely can not say enough good things about this project!
The soon to be ivy covered building designed by Chad Oppenheim will be a truly green hotel in all aspects of the word. The hotel will donate 1 percent of its profits to local environmental organizations and it will receive LEED certification from the Green Building Council.
The developer plans to plant the ivy next month and it will not only serve as an architectural highlight, but it will also act as an organic shell to insulated the building and absorb pollution. As the “green movement” is growing stronger, its important that businesses become more eco-friendly. Congrats to Chad and the 1 Hotel. Not only is a green hotel extremely innovative but also better for the environment. Check out openeco.org. Its a great non-profit website where businesses can plug in their energy consumption and compare them with other businesses within their industry in efforts to reduce their carbon footprints. If 1 Hotel were to this utilize tool, socially conscious consumers on the site may appreciate the efforts as well as associate the green efforts with the hotel.
That ivy will come down once they realize that they are basically ladders for roof rats. Hopefully those windows are sealed shut.

You’re right DG, they are expecting to break ground halfway through this year, but since they want to have the ivy ready (and large enough) to cover the entire building, they plan to begin growing the ivy next month! It will then be transplanted.
