Clouds Clear for Skyland
24 04 2008The Skyland Town Center project at Alabama Avenue in SE has had some major set backs in the past, but it seems like things are finally starting to get some traction.
We just got word that the development team of Rappaport and Smith Companies have completed the master plan and a Planned Unit Development (PUD) application is ready to be filed with the DC Zoning Commission, which is a huge step!
The architect on the project Torti Gallas & Partners plans for more than 320,000 square feet of retail space consisting of a combination of high-quality, large format national-brand retailers and neighborhood serving shops and restaurants. This retail is in addition to around 420 residential units all with a modern brick exterior surrounding a central shopping corridor.
This project has always had great potential, and now that they have mostly resolved the legal issues, it looks like it won’t be long before we actually start to see some dirt moving! [Rendering: Torti Gallas]
Anyone have any ideas for what Skyland’s slogan should be?

Ok how about… “Sandcastles in the Skylands”
that rendering is old. The site plan is a little less suburban and more interesting now.

Hey DG,
I looked at the skyland site and didn’t see anything different? Am I missing somthing? There arn’t any additional 3D renderings different than the one here…
The sketches do look nice though!
you’re right it is the only one on the site, but it is from before the site plan and architecture was changed as a result of community input and about 8 months of design changes… the site plan is, as far as I know, up to date, but that 3D flyover is from earlier last year.
and to make my over-commenting official…
essentially what has changed from this image to the plans today is that the big box store is much more integrated with the development and there is no suburban-style surface parking lot. Also the architecture will have more variation than this rendering shows.
Thanks for the update!
What’s the big-box gonna be?
Does anyone know if there are any plans to renovate the small shopping center located in Shipley Terrace? on the corner of 23rd Street and Savannah Street SE?
still unannounced… they have mentioned Target and Costco… either I would Love to see come over here..
Just trying to spread the word, this Saturday, July 19, 2008, Ward 8 Clean and Green, sponsored by Marion Barry and Fenty, are looking for volunteers to come out.
