Sharp Design for the Drost
22 05 2008
The folks at Division One Architects are known for pushing the envelop of modern architecture design in the area. They currently have the 27 unit “Lacey” under construction in Shaw but they are not stopping there… they have numerous other projects in the planning stages to help transform the neighborhood.
Their next project is named The Drost (rendering above) and is typical of the design aesthetics of other Division One projects. The Drost will only have 4 full floor units and the most interesting design choice is a light well which will provide natural lighting to units on all the floors. It’s something we have never seen work well in the past, so it remains to be seen how it will function but we look forward to seeing the project start to go up this year.
Despite the strange name, they should have no problem moving these very distinct homes. The sales team is saying there will be a 2009 delivery.

Maybe I just don’t have a refined appreciation for modern architecture, but I live around the corner from the Lacey they are building in shaw and I just don’t get it, it looks strange to me, am I the only one?
BigBog- I think its just a matter of taste. I personally love the Lacey, the W Street Residence, and am liking the Drost rendering above. In fact, I’m pretty pumped that the whole area between U St and Florida Ave is turning into DC’s modern district, like Northern Liberties in Philly. But you’re not the only person I’ve heard who’s not a fan of the style…there seems to be an ongoing debate on the Prince of Petworth blog everytime he posts a photo of one of these modern condos. To each their own.
I like it. After looking at the depressingly dull boxes all over downtown, I find more and more, that modern architecture can be really inspiring. We need more of it, so I appreciate what D1 is doing.
I love it. A capital city should excel in all forms of architecture, old and new. DC has plenty of amazing old architecture, and I believe we are slowly developing a great collection of modern buildings. There are definitely plenty of ugly mistakes along the way, but that’s how you learn…
[…] there is something in the DCMetrocentric watercooler, but for some reason we are really into contemporary architecture this week. Today’s PriceChecker is a ridiculous modern home by an AIA award winning […]
