The Mailbox: Time for a Wash

4 06 2008

Today’s mailbox is a case of something we find all to often in our city, making a trip to a business only to find it shuttered.

“Hiya. I was just curious. There used to be a big carwarsh on New York Ave. near where the ATF bldg. currently stands. I went there, expecting to wash it, but it was shuttered. Someone told me that the block has been purchased, and they’ll be building some big office bldg. there soon. Any idea on what may be up? Cheers! - Hans”

Well Hans you are not the first to be tricked by the huge sparkly sign along New York Ave Northeast.  The New York Ave Car wash was at one time one of the areas great and affordable car washes, unfortunately as you suspected, changing times have pushed them out the door. The phone number is now disconnected and the building currently sits empty.

This block of New York Ave is slated to become part of the Capitol Square project, and will join the ATF and eventual new neighbor the Washington Gateway buildings as the NoMa area is completely redeveloped.  Capitol Square is being developed by JBG and will include 650,000 SF of office, 160,000 SF retail, 666 residential units, and a 225 room hotel. We spoke with JBG and the first phase is scheduled to be complete in 2010 with full completion in 2012 or later.

I love Wendy’s but that one just sucks! Worst service ever and even though Wendy’s always has soggy fries, that one has fries that might as well be soup.

Can everyone see my comment?

That McDonalds is still very scary at night, and I think it IS part of the development plans though not the first phase. I still prefer the burger king with the Walkthrough Window by Verizon center!

…and yes Roy we can see you (and your cheating pricechecker crown!)

Hold on…Walk-through window?! That is a drunk person’s dream. I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to walk through a drive-through and been turned down. I was trying to be good and not drink and drive and punished for it, not nice at all.

I have to check that out. How far is it off the metro?

it’s a known fact that the mickey dee’s is an evening place on weekends to buy and sell illicit drugs. i can’t wait until that hellhole is gone.

the bk walkthrough window is almost across the street from the rear entrance to the movie theater. sort of by where coyote ugly used to be. it’s hilarious.

i frequent the area all the time, and have never seen anyone ordering from it….
