National Geographic’s Iconic Window Design for the Future

6 06 2008

Some designs are just iconic throughout the world, and the National Geographic’s yellow window certainly fits that category. When architect Travis Price AIA designed Explorers Hall for the Dupont Circle National Geographic headquarters, he also envisioned an incedible grand entrance which he designed but didn’t get to build…

Until now… THE DESIGN IS BEING RECONSIDERED! Come on, you know you’re excited too! Just look at the structure made of curving, irregularly spaced lines. The informal, sculptural quality of this structure is inspired by the lines of latitude and longitude on the globe. The design also allows for the atrium to switch from indoor to outdoor space and would include photovoltaic cells to generate enough electricity to be self sufficient.

It’s amazing how something as simple as a yellow rectangle has endured as such a recognizable icon for all these years and if this design gets built, National Geographic will certainly have another iconic design on their hands. We will keep you posted! [Rendering Credit - Travis Price and AIA]

no no no! i love being able to saunter across the street and eat my lunch in their courtyard (currently occupied with the trash people). if they build this, we’ll loose our secret lunch spot!

also, what will happen to the trees? will they build around them or [gasp] cut them down??

I like it, but the render looks weird for some reason.

And what about our resident mallards? They wouldn’t be able to use the pond unless they waddled in. But it is an eye-catching design.

trust me, this isn’t going to happen. it’s been brought up every couple years, and given the financial stress the society is under right now, this is absolutely not a possibility.
