Adams Morgan 1934

11 06 2008

Look familiar? Amazingly over the last 70 years the buildings at the corner of 18th Street and Columbia Road NW have remained mostly unchanged other than the Peoples Drug StoreĀ being replaced by a McDonald’s. The name Adams Morgan actually didn’t come into useĀ until the 1950s from the names of the two area High Schools.

Here’s what it looks like now, other than the McDonald’s awning, it is exactly the same as it was in 1934. Amazing, we just wish there were still street cars!

Actually the schools in the area were not high schools but primary K-8 schools. The Adams School was an all-white school and the Old Morgan School was an all-black school. Before it got its name, I think it was part of Kalorama and/or Lanier Heights.
