Union “Bike” Station
20 06 2008Pictured below is the incredible futuristic new bike transit center designed by KGP Studios for the District DOT. Despite all the issues involved in making Union Station a true center of transportation, this is definitely a step in the right direction. The design includes both storage and rental facilities… precisely the type of infrastructure the city needs to make alternate forms of transportation attractive.

The project is being built on the west side of Union Station near the metro exit and should be finished by the end of this year. Also it goes without saying that the design looks really awesome… we got one more rendering for you after the jump…

It looks good. Nice to see that this area is becoming more pedestrian and bike friendly.
I love the juxtapostion of the modern and the historic. It reminds me of what the great European capitals have been doing for years. Little things like this along with the previous post will really helps to diminish DC’s stodgy rep.
[…] DC Metrocentric has the scoop on a new bike transit center designed for the District DOT. […]
[…] may have noticed this week that construction has begun on the new Bike Station that we mentioned back in June being built at Union Station. We have been big fans of the very cool looking glass shell ever […]
Love its shape. Only 150 bikes is ridiculously small, but at least they’ll be covered. Hope they can do something about the crime problem–bikes are picked clean there currently.
Now they need to expand this concept to other metro stops.
Will there still be vehicle traffic coming from and to the garage on that side of Union Station once the bike station is finished? Right now the Circulator bus uses the ramp from the garage on that side.
