Foggy Bottom - Then and Now
8 07 2008The view looking NW from the Washington Monument sure has changed over the last 100 years! Really the only thing that is recognizable in the photo from 1911 on the left that is still around today is the Organization of American States building in the lower right corner. The shot really gives you a good idea of how far this city has come from sleepy swamp town… to Capitol of the free world! Amazing!

Follow the jump for a close up of the 1911 photo…

A few years prior to this photo, The George Washington University (GW) had sold the land at 17th Street, Constitution Avenue and Virginia Avenue to the Organization of American States. GW used the funds to purchase property at the site of its current main campus in Foggy Bottom, beginning in 1912.
the older photo shows the aqueduct, no? key bridge wasn’t started until 1917 (or somesuch).
