SW DC Waterfronts Big Plans

22 07 2008

Check out this just released rendering of what we can expect from the new Southwest DC Waterfront. Out with the seafood shacks and old clubs, and in with a vibrant open plaza surrounded by shops. We do like this vision, especially how the buildings all include green roofs, but where are they going to get a big old ship like the one pictured?

I like everything except for the ship, reminds me of the one at the Baltimore Inner Harbor.

Nice but…

I still want some seafood shacks, and maybe some clubs.

It does look a lot like Baltimore’s Inter Harbor, not that that’s a bad thing.

That ship in Baltimore is the USS Constellation, which is a real 150-year-old ship. I have no idea what this is supposed to be, but I sincerely hope they put something authentic in if they want to lure kiddies and add character.

Reminds me of the original National Harbor renderings. Hopefully the end product won’t look as plastic as NH is shaping up to be.

I like it although the architecture is still getting stale IMO. I mean, it looks like it would be a hit as is, but I wish we could make some kind of a statement.

Aside from architecture, I’ve always thought that between the SW Waterfront, the Nats Stadium and perhaps Rosslyn, there were some good potential locations for DC’s little Time Square. I wish we could develop some a real theatre/entertainment district in DC aside from maybe Gallery Place.

Vik- Have you seen the new renderings for the Arena Theatre? It looks awesome, and will be a short walk from this and the new Waterfront Mall. SW would be a good place to buy right about now (despite how depressing it is right now…)

That rendering has been around for at least four months. Here’s a link to Hoffman/Struever’s site (www.swdcwaterfront.com) that describes the project and includes a few renderings of the new SW waterfront.

I agree with Vik the architecture is stale. It looks like everything else in DC. We won’t be able to tell what neighorhood we are in. The Arena Stage is one bright spot but we could use some distinctive/iconic architecture in SW.

also, this isn’t the part that will replace the fish market.

Actually this is part of the development that will replace most of the fish market area as well as all the clubs in that area (H2O, Zanzibar, etc).
