Portico Under Construction
21 08 2008The Portico condos in Silver Spring are a 12-story building that faced extensive community opposition in its early stages, but as you can see is finally starting to put on the finishing touches. We must say though, the first floor retail does look like it is going to be fairly disengaged from the street… what do you guys think?
Update: Apparently there isn’t going to be any retail at all, the builders informed us that it is not in the zoning which is really disappointing for that area.

I think the McDonalds next door has more character than this building, it’s ugly

The Portico is pretty ugly, not gonna lie . . . but it’s hidden by the office building directly across the street, so most people will never really see it.
Retail wouldn’t do well here, anyway. Any shop that depends on foot traffic would die a slow and painful death here, tucked away like this. It’s disappointing, because this site is literally across the street from the Metro.
Thank god this building can be reskinned in 50 years when zoning makes sense. All hail the curtainwall.
