Pennsylvania Ave 1881

22 08 2008

Check out this great shot of Pennsylvania Ave from 1881. The most predominant building of the time was the recently built Willard Hotel. You can see how Pennsylvania Ave was a straight shot back then from the White House before it was realigned around Freedom Plaza. The varied storefronts on right were all demolished for the JW Marriott.

I wish DC still had Street Cars, is any group trying to bring them back?

I remember something a few years ago, but never heard anything since.

Great view - with the statue of Governor “Boss” Shepard on the left and the old offices of The Washington Post to the right. I like this alignment of Pa. Avenue better than the disruption of Freedom Plaza.

I just came back from San Francisco and is so nice to see how the preserved the street cars and trains on the streets. I hope DC bring them back.
