New GWU Residence Hall

2 09 2008

Down in Foggy Bottom, Square 54 has been getting all the attention these days, but it’s not the only major project happening on GWs campus. The Residence Hall at Square 80 is well under way as you can see. It’s being built on the former site of the campus tennis courts, which unfortunately are not being replaced.

Exterior work will continue over the next few months on the 474 bed dorm and is on track to be ready for occupancy by 2009. We do hope they eventually come up with a better name for the residence hall though, it sure does get confusing with all the buildings named Square Something! The tennis courts have been replaced with a new and larger tennis facility at GW’s Mount Vernon Campus. The new residence hall will be named for a benefactor sometime in the future.

The Mt Vernon Campus is not really easily accessible to students on the main campus, I guess it’s nice for the NCAA athletes, but for those that want a leisurely game, the loss of these two courts is significant.

I agree that the courts are less convenient for main campus users, but free shuttles are provided by the University to the upper NW campus. The land in Foggy Bottom is just too valuable (and limited) for tennis courts. And the neighborhood did push GW to build more residence halls on the main campus. Maybe some courts could be built on the large flat roof of Smith Center!

i hate GW. as a school, it’s fine. as a neighbor? blech! i hate that i have to drive through the city streets that i pay for and deal with a bunch of snotty kids that think it’s their campus. it’s not.

GW? BOOOOO!!

You know a lot of schools have indoor tennis courts, and courts on the top of buildings are very common in places like Manhatan, it could work in Foggy Bottom.

1) Aren’t there tennis courts over by the State Department that people could use? We used them all the time while I was living on campus.

2) Shuttles run to Mt. Vernon all the time. It is NOT difficult to get there to use those courts.

3) GW is an urban campus, just like BU, NYU, etc., and neighbors of those schools deal with the students. Having trouble getting around? Don’t drive down H Street in the middle of the day. There are probably 100 other ways to get around the city that don’t involve you driving through campus.

Noel, the Tennis Courts you are referencing belong to the Federal Reserve Board, not State, and are completely off limits (there are guards there 24/7) so not sure how you were able to use them?

That is unless your tennis partner was Alan Greenspan

Hey poo poo -

GW was established in DC in 1821 and moved to Foggy Bottom in 1912. When did you move to the neighborhood?
