Washington 1791 to 2008

4 09 2008

We just love it when the Post gets all interactive on us! There is a great feature article up on the site with a little “then and now” action of how Washington has changed over the years from L’Enfants original plan to the street grid of today. Back in 1791 there were fewer than 5,000 people in the territory, and now there are over a half million residents.

The most striking change, at least to the down town area, is the reclamation of the Potomac to create the rest of the National Mall to the West of the Washington Monument.

“Reclamation” of the Potomac… interesting choice of words. Granted it’s the correct usage, but it’s a term I hate, since rivers and swamps aren’t “reclaimed,” they’re filled in!
