Department Store in Georgetown
12 09 2008That’s right… the department store Bloomingdale’s is apparently coming to Georgetown. The retailer will take 82,000 sq ft in the Shops at Georgetown Park and be open by the summer of 2011. The space slated for the new 3 story store is on the western side of the mall right on M Street where the Intermix and White House/Black Market stores (which will have to move) are currently located.

We have always found this mall to be fairly empty at most times due to all the great shopping out on M Street so this might help draw more people into the mall, what do you guys think? [Flickr Photo: Otavio DC]

It’ll definitely bring more people to the mall. I like the move for Bloomingdales, hopefully, we can get one more large store in that mall at least. Something a bit unique, perhaps.
I hate to see what kind of subsidy was given to get them there, however. And I’m usually all for enticing development by giving out govt subsidies, but in bad areas, not good ones like Gtown.
[...] DC Metrocentric reports that a new Bloomingdale’s department store will be taking up residence in the Shops at Georgetown Park. That should make for a nice addition to the shopping mall, appropriate for Georgetown, and gives you more of a reason to go there than just for Benihana and the DMV. I think this is the section that originally housed a branch of Garfinckel’s. I wish Bloomingdales had decided to locate at Metro Center, downtown, instead of G’town.
Check out the WBJ article. Apparently this will be their concept store for a “faster, younger, and hipper crowd” modeled after the one in SoHo. It will be the second concept store outside of Manhattan. On a side note, the SoHo location includes a restaurant, so let’s see what happens here!
I’m looking forward to the day that this new hip and urban Bloomingdales concept store opens up in D.C. Yippie!
