Town and Country: 1913

Back in 1913 the “country” was a whole lot closer than it is today. This is the intersection of Woodland Drive at 32nd Street NW from June 1913. Throughout that summer the entire area of Massachusetts Avenue Heights had sidewalks and lamp posts added as more people started to move out to the “country” to escape the growing downtown area.

I loved thise old glass street signs in DC that used to be attached to the wrought iron street lights. The street light globes helped to illuminate the backlit street signs!
