Clarendon Development/Demo
3 11 2008Just down the street from all the construction going on for the new Clarendon Center, another construction site has sprung up at Clarendon Blvd and North Danville Street. The demolition of an old garage, a car dealership, and a few store fronts is for an unnamed mysterious project by Walnut Street Development.

WSD’s web site is very ambiguous about the future of the site and they didn’t respond to our emails, but there is a very modern looking building pictured on the website. Though we doubt that’s what is actually planed for the site, it just wouldn’t fit into the neighborhood at all. We will keep you posted when we hear what’s actually planned.
Another shot of the demolition with a little more perspective…

That design would be interesting in Clarendon, it wouldn’t fit, but I’m not sure whether that’s a bad thing.
The design would be so out of place on that block, but as long as they replace the store fronts that they just demolished, it will be nice to see more density on that street which is so close to two metro stations.
Why does everything have to match? What made Clarendon great before was the mix of styles, shapes and sizes. As long as architecture is sensitive to the streetscape, I think variety makes for a much more vibrant and “real” community.
I’m not a fan of that WSD illustration. Regardless of whether the building “matches” the others around it, that strip of land is in a would-be dense part of the corridor and should be developed with street-friendly store fronts.
