Ford’s Theater 1865

12 11 2008

Sleepy western town? Nope try downtown Washington DC in 1865 where the majority of streets throughout the area remained dirt for another 40 years. Pictured in the center of the photo is Ford’s Theatre looking much the way it does today, it’s just the neighborhood around it that has changed! Got any interesting historic shots? Send them our way and we will post the best ones.

Amazing photo. Hard to believe that DC used to be such a sleepy little town.

The building at the end of the block (corner of E Street) was an early home for the George Washington University (Columbian) School of Medicine. The mansard-like roof was designed to let the maximum amount of natural light into labs on the top floor.
