Hotel One Demolition Starts
25 11 2008Perhaps the folks at Starwood Capital were listening to us when we were worried about the progress of the Hotel One project at 22nd and M Street. Demolition has finally started to make way for the Chad Oppenheim designed eco-hotel in the West End.

The building being taken down on the site sat empty for a year and we were starting to worry that if they didn’t get started soon, they wouldn’t be able to stay on schedule. You know if there’s demo going on in this city, you can count on us to bring you all the glorious details… more pics after the jump…

I share your obsesion with demolition! Thank you for the glorious shots, it’s about time they got started on this project.
I’m very surprised about the extent of demolition of given the marketing of this project as “Green.” Floor to floor heights of the existing building are pretty generous, not to mention some well executed brick work. I’m not advocating preservation, but I’d like to know what possible reasons they could have had for not re-using the existing building as part of the final design. It is a stunning final design, which makes a lot of green claims, but it is sad and ironic that they are trashing a good building to build a so-called “green” building.
Just an FYI - the name of the hotel is “1 Hotel” with a number 1 instead of the word one. You can view information on it by visiting www.1hotels.com..
