To Do: National Building Museum
15 12 2008Looking for something to do with the family who’s in town for the Holidays? Number one on our agenda is the National Building Museum. Built in 1887 to house the Pension Bureau and transformed into a museum by an act of congress, the museum is a great place to take friends and family who have already done the Smithsonian loop and are looking for something different.

The National Building Museum, much like us here at DCMetrocentric, is dedicated to exploring and celebrating architecture, design, engineering, construction, and planning. There is always something interesting going on at the vast Museum so we have pulled together some info on the best exhibits.
The Museum’s hours during the Holidays are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and open weekends 10:00 am to 4:30 pm Saturday, 11:00 am to 4:30 pm Sunday. The museum will only be closed Christmas day. There are definitely some exhibits that are worth checking out…
Green Community
This exhibition explores the origins of our precarious ecological situation and introduces communities large and small where citizens, political leaders, planning and design professionals, developers, and government agencies are working together for a more sustainable future. Green Community also includes a “close to home” section that focuses on green communities in the Washington, D.C. metro region.
Washington: Symbol & City
This exhibition explores how residents experience the city and how Washington itself expresses the tension between the demands of a working seat of government and the desire for a national symbol, and the hopes and needs of an evolving city.
There is also a tour of the historical highlights of the Musuem three times a day at 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 1:30 pm. and lasts about 45 minutes. The Building is located at 5th and F Street NW and is on the Metro Red line at Judiciary Square.

And it has the best museum shop in DC!
That museum shop is great, and you could kill two birds with one stone, take your family sightseeing, and get them presents!
It’s a gorgeous building. One of my agents used to work there, sounded like a great building in which to work.
love love love this building and museum.
