Basement of “Glass Oasis” Ready

9 01 2009

Remember the new building going in next to the MLK library in Penn Quarter that we dubbed a “windowless street level design with zero street-facing retail?” Well the foundation has been dug and the site is ready for vertical construction to get started.

We don’t recall having ever seen so many subterranean retaining wall supports on such a shallow dug basement before. We suspect it’s because they can’t drill into the surrounding property for tie-downs.

Cool photo too right? We love the way it’s framed! [Photo Credit: serk1]

For the opposite extreme you have to check out the GW’s hole at Washington Circle. I’ve never seen an excavation so deep with such piddly shoring.

What is that framing the picture? Some type of fence or something?

According to an article in the Washington Business Journal, PN Hoffman won’t begin verticle construction until they sign a lead tenant, so this hole could be around a while.
