Retail Therapy Downtown
12 01 2009In an ailing economy this is just the type of news to bring a smile to 20 something shop-o-holics faces. We just received word from Dogulas Development that clothing stores Forever 21 and Guess are signed on to open up in the new building going up at 1155 F Street. Lovers of cheap clothing and clubwear rejoice!

These retailers move us ever closer to bringing downtown back to its heyday as a true shopping destination and not an urban no-mans-land when all the office workers have gone home. Pictured is the San Francisco Forever 21 store, unfortunately ours will probably not look as nice. [Photo: byte]

Rejoicing!
I’d say Downtown Washington is holding its own as a retail destination, with anchors such as the five-level Macy*s department store at Metro Center and the new retailers in the Woodies building. Now how do we get that proposed Apple store to switch from G’town to Downtown?
The Macy’s is great but there is hardly enough retail along F Street to make it a shopping destination, like Georgetown or any area Mall where you can get all your shopping done.
Having a Forever 21 walking distance from my office is going to be dangerous.
Agreed, Downtown is definitely holding its own as a shopping destination . What will REALLY pull it together though is the planned CityCenter development on the old convention center site. Between that, Gallery Place, and all the new retail offerings around F and G streets, downtown will finally have re-arrived.
Good point about the former convention center site. Is there any talk of another department store (e.g. Bloomingdale’s, Lord & Taylor) coming to the downtown CityCenter project? Has adequate space been planned at the site for such a use? Hope so.
I think I heard they’re trying to get a luxury anchor like Bloomie’s or Neimand Marcus…I can’t remember which. That was a while back though…I haven’t heard anything as of late.
Now I dont have to go Pentagon City no more !
