NSTA Eats Two Arlington Restaurants For Expansion

21 01 2009

Being huge fans of both the Rhodeside Grill and Il Radicchio in Arlington’s Courthouse Neighborhood, we are sad to report that both restaurants will become victims of Development. The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) in efforts to expand their headquarters will be demolishing the two restaurants between Wilson and Clarendon.

The development of the new 6 story Headquarter building adjecent to their current building will be handled by DRI Development Services and already has received County Board approval. The project does have ground level retail space so perhaps the restaurants might be able to reoccupy the new space, but we aren’t holding our breath.

We just can’t imagine that late night karaoke sessions at the Rhodeside Grill’s dive of a basement will ever be able to be recreated in a new space. We do like the rendering though, but can anyone figure out what those dice looking things on the side are? [Rendering: DRI]

Ugh, I’m really upset about this. I love Il Radicchio. Any idea when this is going to happen?

ahh, the tension between added density and preserving character.

there are ways to add density without blandification — doesn’t look like that will be the case here, unfortunately.

Those places are beat anyway. Especially Il Radicchio. The new building looks nice.

[…] Rhodeside Grill (*sniffle*) and Il Radicchio in Courthouse will close to make way for the development of the National Science Teachers Association building.  More over at DC Metrocentric. […]

What a bummer! The new building looks nice, but I will miss Rhodeside. My husband and I had our first date there and ate there at least once a month.

Well considering how other developments have been put on hold because of the economy and mortgage crisis, like the doctor who was planning to redevelop his property at 1700 Wilson, it could be a long time before this happens, unless Science Teachers have figured out a new way to make money and get construction loans, in this economy.

Either way I hope they leave room for the restaurants as I got to Rhodeside with my neighbors all the time,

Reminds me of a squat version of the Odyssey up the street.

Rhodeside is one of the only “neighborhood” bars in this area, especially if you look at all the Rosslyn area, there is hardly anything there at night.

I will miss this place, but its almost May and its still unknown when this will happen.
