Design Finalists for African American History Museum
30 01 2009We got word this morning from the Smithsonian Institute that 6 finalists have been selected to compete for the final design of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The list of teams is a who’s who in the architecture world and includes starchitects such as I.M. Pei and Norman Foster. Construction is slated to begin in 2012 once the final design is selected.
Pictured is a site plan rendering of how the new museum will fit into it’s place on the National Mall, but we will be sure to bring you each teams designs as they finalize their visions. Having seen some of the preliminary work already, we imagine there are going to be some pretty exciting final designs.

Glad there’s some well-respected architects designing this, but we don’t need any more monuments on the mall IMO. I like the open space and I don’t want us bastardizing the museums where we have to have every group represented. And maybe in the future we build some museums in areas outside the mall to get more people exploring the other areas of the city. Not in the ghetto but perhaps in the areas that are on the cusp of development like NoMa and Nationals Park.
I couldn’t agree with Vik more. Let’s spread out the museums and monuments. There are some great places around the city.

especially since the japanese war prisoner/detention center museum is going to go next door, right next to the “vikings discovered the new world” museum.
just let me jog in my city and pay taxes as a fee for NOT VOTING.
