Union Station 1925

17 02 2009

Back in 1925, Columbus Circle in front of Union Station sure had a much simpler street-scape to navigate than it does today. Hopefully much of that will be changing with the future redesign of the circle but it is amazing to think about how much the increase in vehicles downtown has altered the area in more ways than just the obvious like more congestion and dangerous street crossings.

In order to accommodate the huge number of people who choose to drive into this area of town everyday, the baseball diamond in the foreground of this photo has long been replaced by a surface parking lot. It sure would be great to still have recreation space in this area and not just an asphalt slab.

You can see the printing office being built in the background of the photo, very cool

What the heck is going on with the Columbus Circle redesign? I thought it was supposed to be well underway by now, but I haven’t heard a thing. Typical DDOT

cool old photo — it looks like there is actually a game going on. I wonder who is playing…

Let’s have the DC United play there! No new stadium needed, and just as many fans!

Columbus Circle (actually a half-circle) was originally envisioned by the McMillan Commission to be defined with an impressive arc of buildings enclosing the space, across from Union Station. Now we have undefined space and surface parking lots.

those parking lots are quite possibly the biggest waste of space anywhere in the city. such valuable land, used for cars, when there are many forms of transit available right across the street!
