Shaw’s Mystery Church Update
23 03 2009Remember the mystery church building with no entrance just off U Street? Well it looks like an entire brick addition has been added to the building next to it and you can now see building materials in front and inside the window of the stairless building. We didn’t see any permits, but work is clearly underway! What do you think it’s going to be?

What fun to find your house on DC Metrocentric … Here is the answer to the speculation… The short answer is it will be a two car garage on the lower level with a “man cave” on the upper level… The “chapel” has a bit of an historic past, it was built around 1908 for one of the first African American Oral Surgeons in the country, the doctor owned the adjacent house and this was his dentist office… African American architect William Sidney Pittman of Washington, D.C. who later designed the YMCA just down 12th street also designed this building… this was an earlier project… the 12th Street Christian Church bought the property back in the early 1970s and used it for almost 40 years as a community outreach property… It is my intent to make the “Chapel” usable and also keep it recognizable to all who have known it over the years… I removed the stairs before they fell down, but will rebuild the entrance as the project proceeds. Oh and BTW, we like to refer to the area as the “trendy U Street corridor” these days…
