$55M for National Mall Repairs

23 04 2009

We got word that the Department of the Interior is going to pony up $55 million of it’s stimulus funding to repair the National Mall. This is big news, because if you remember the National Mall was going to get it’s own funding from Congress, but ended up getting cut last minute.

Most of the money will go towards repairing the dismal looking Reflecting Pool. However a portion is also going to be used to fix the sinking problem that the Jefferson Memorial plaza and seawall is having. Since the monument was built on marshland, it has for years been slowly sinking into the Tidal Basin, so we are happy to hear poor Jefferson will be saved from the advancing waters!

This is good news, the National Mall is so embarrassing, especially when you compare our city to other world capitals, it’s not even close.
