GW’s Square 54 Model
13 05 2009Since we reported on the progress being made over at Square 54 earlier this week, we have gotten a lot of emails about what the final design is going to look like, well ask and you shall receive. Check out the design by Pelli Clarke Pelli and Hickok Cole. Looks like there is going to a nice open plaza, what do you think about a weekly market of some type?

I think it looks relatively alright. I can always complain about some of what we see going up, but I think it’ll work in this location.
A farmers market would be great, for not only foggy bottom but that entire area.
yeah, a farmer’s market would likely be successful. not only with students, but with the 2.45 residents that still live in the area.
we should tax students that live and attend GW to pay for the roads they screw up, the paint we use to give them “public” walkways, etc.
is there a comparison with NYU? it’s kind of the same situation.
i hate driving through MY CITY in that area, because it seems like it’s a campus, it acts like a campus, but there is no regard for DC residents.
PP: your city? Washington is the nation’s capital and it belongs to all of us. If someone attends GW for 4 years or more and lives on the main campus, this person is also a resident of Foggy Bottom. GW’s main campus has been designated and approved by the National Capital Planning Commission and the DC Government for over 50 years and it is an open campus which does not restrict public access. Neighbors have free access to GW libraries and other campus facilities are open for use by residents. Why not try being more positive in the future!
There already is a Foggy Bottom farmer’s market every Wednesday on the 24th Street side of the Foggy Bottom Metro. It’s pretty popular. Maybe they will move it to the other side once construction is complete if it’s a larger space.
What about a 2nd entrance to the Metro? The hole’s there. And, a brutalist bldg. to replace the one at 16th and I? A skyway to protect people from the cars on 23rd street? An intercity terminal for our fly-by-night coaches?
There IS a farmers market.
PP: GW pays tens of millions if not more in taxes every year to the city. And how exactly do the students screw up the roads?
Any word on what’s going into those buildings?
Pretty uninspired, but I have seen worse. I’m sure GW will make a mint on the commercial space to be included in this development.
