Then&Now: Surratt House

30 06 2009

Way back in 1865, the Surratt house at 604 H Street, NW, was a boarding house run by Mary Surratt and was where John Wilkes Booth was alleged to have met with co-conspirators to plan President Lincoln’s assassination. Now it’s a pretty good Chinese restaurant. We think they should put back on the shutters, it would add back some lost charm! What do you think?

I like how all the houses back in the day had their entrances on the 2nd floors, was that some type of security thing?

I’m a fan of the second-floor entrance too.

Thanks for the picture. My great-grandmother and her family lived at this house back in the 1880s. The story goes that they moved, I think just next door, because of the looky-loos that kept coming by and trying to take a souvenir of the house.
