I don’t think that there is such a thing as “a must have interior design item.” It’s impossible to create any one item that is necessary, because it’s always possible to create a different item that performs the same function. That, in my opinion, is the beauty of interior design — it gives us choice.

My boyfriend has some old school film reels mounted as art on the wall in his living room. I absolutely love his combination of found items and modern decor – it’s nearly a perfect balance. It’s not about a single piece but the whole combination and the style in which it was assembled.

A must have? Definitely a chair, everyone needs a well crafted chair to comfortably plot their toosh in. A chair elevates us to civility

Definitely the DC neighborhood poster, some flowers, and a nice giant piece of abstract art. Not necessarily in that order, mind you.

I would have to argue that the most important pieces in a home today are the ones you use most often; the Television and the Computer. As a result the most integral furniture pieces are the elements that support those pieces. The desk or laptop stand, the television mount, credenza or cabinet. They are the places your eye naturally gravitates to and the space you spend the most time.

Every DC home should have multifunctional furniture. A bench that serves as storage and seating, an island that serves as work space or eating space, or a piano that serves as an instrument or a t.v. stand.

I’ve seen a lot of really good suggestions here, but I would have to say my essentials are live plants and multifunctional furniture. I like my interior spaces to look clean and uncluttered, which is near impossible when you have 50 pieces of furniture all with unique functions!

Gotta say the best piece to have is a good quality table. It’s versatile — can be used to study at, read at, sit with family and friends and bond over, eat on, fold laundry on, paint art on…. well, you get the idea. It’s a gathering place to do all sorts of things. Cherish the memories of times spent around a good quality table. They are everlasting and enduring.

The large black & white photos of my family framed in white teak wood hanging in a collage in the living room. The most important design items make a statement about who you are, and what says who you are better than priceless family photos.

a historic photo of your neighborhood/street/block/home – always nice to have a reminder of the past

The flat, open writing desk.

This incredibly simple piece of furniture is usually one of the hardest to design, like a simple white shirt for clothing designers. However, it is the most essential in a home.

We always need a place to sit and jot a note while on the phone, rest our laptop or sketch out an idea.

A mid 20th C. metal tabletop lamp I found in an antiques shop, brass globe base with black painted upward cone punctuated with tiny star-shaped openings. I love when the light shines through those stars! Functional, funky and all around awesome. Now that’s good design.

The must-have for my place is my pair of padded, orange vinyl waiting room chairs, complete with a “Property of Continental Airlines” metal tag attached to the underside. The decorating scheme for my entire condo has been built around these love-’em-or-hate-’em wonders from the ’70s.

I’ll say fresh flowers. They seem to finish a room, create drama and reflect the season.

Lighting. It doesn’t have to be expensive even though many beautiful options are. Lighting has the ability of completely changing the dynamics of a room: softening edges, highlighting architectural details, creating a warm glow or providing simple utilitarian task lighting. I am constantly adding to my collection, sometimes retiring old pieces, and shifting others around to create a new atmosphere.

Hello people, and happy Friday. I’m all for modern furniture and associated interior design items. I would love to win any one of these four pieces. I’m looking to accessorize my 1960′s shelving unit pictured here:

A must have interior design item for my home is a nice coffee table.

Thanks.
