The Mailbox: 1800 4th St

It’s time once again to take a look into the DCMetrocentric Mailbag! We received this email inquiring about the long time vacant property on Florida Ave NW.
“Thought you might be the best place to turn to get some more information about what is happening with the building at 4th and Florida NW (1800 4th street I think)? It’s a beautiful old building with incredible details but has sat abandoned for many years. I saw that a fence has gone up and work appears to be taking place. Perhaps condos and hopefully some ground floor retail?“
It is a great question that people in the neighborhood have been asking for years. Considering the beautiful details of the building and its prominent corner location, you would think even as a fixer upper it wouldn’t sit vacant long. Well we spoke with the owners and apparently after many years the building is finally under contract. After being listed a few years back at $2.2 million, the property was last listed at $990,000 and hopeful the current contract will go through.
The building itself dates back to 1898 and the work you may have noticed going on over the last few days is to bring the stone work and windows into compliance with Historic District requirements. No word on what the future planed use for the building is, as they are still going through the contracts process, but the property is zoned C2A which mean the project could be anything from retail to residential.
