Inside of New Arent Fox HQ
7 10 2009Now that work has finally commenced on the new 1000 Connecticut Ave building downtown, we are starting to get an idea of what the building is going to look like on the inside (and from the roof). The exterior design by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners has been getting knocked lately so we are interested to hear what you think of these new renderings.

The green rooftop after the jump…

While the design isn’t anything groundbreaking, the views from this building are certainly going to be incredible, including a direct view of the White House… so it has that going for it. [Renderings: Pei Cobb Freed & Partners]

U-G-L-Y you ugly! At least the interior matches the exterior.
That lobby looks nice enough with it’s marble, marble, everywhere, but where is the gold? The silver gilding? Something to convey power and wealth! This lobby doesn’t hold a candle to Wilmer Hale’s lobby.
An atrium like Wilmer Hale’s cuts into the leasable space big time. Property owners/managers tend to want to maximize, especially in DC with the height limits. Thats why we get boxes and not more interesting styles.
While I like simplicity, too many of these places are lack any personality. 1999K is glass box with a weird fin and a white box for a lobby. Its Soviet, with glass in place of concrete.
The green roof is certainly nice.
Yes, from above the green roof looks cool. I can’t wait to use it!
Oh…it’s just for the building’s tenants, and no one else will be able to see it. I forgot.
A real shame that the opportunity for a preeminent architect (or his firm) to make a definitive statement at the most visible intersection in the most powerful city in the world results in this unremarkable box. One would expect more from the designer of the National Gallery East Building, but then again … they also made 2099 Penn.
Boring boring boring. Such an uninspiring design for such a prominent location is a waste. In 30 years, we’ll be tearing down most of the glass curtain buildings while saying, “What were they thinking?”
