Metro Public Art Designs

19 02 2010

Fresh in our inbox this morning is word from a tipster on the new public art that was just approved by the Metro board at their meeting this week. The piece is a massive mosaic tile collage (pictured below) that will be installed at the Takoma Park station entrance, also approved were aluminum light sculptures that will be added at Farragut West.

Have a tip, question, or comment? We love to hear from you

I love art and think that the Metro stations need a little more visual appeal…but my question is: Who is paying for this? Does WMATA have a contract with the artists? If so, how much are they paying?

As a frustrated Metro rider, I would prefer that they put more money into fixing their transportation issues.

They’re paid for by the DC Commission on Arts and the Humanities and the Golden Triangle BID.

Glad to see the Metro getting a little less drab and sterile.

Now lets see those ugly, empty escalator walls get some art as well, or at least some tasteful, colorful advertising.

I’ve often thought that the center of the arches at Metro Center would be a perfect place to hang banners, or giant flat screen TVs. If your train is 20 minutes late, you can at least catch up on ESPN.
