Cathedral Commons Back On

22 12 2011

The plans to redevelop the stretch of Wisconsin Avenue NW into a more pedestrian friendly and more urban area are back on after clearing a legal hurdle and delays from back in August. The controversy was over zoning laws, but the developer along with Giant Foods won out and can now get back to work to bring a brand new 6,000 sq-ft grocery store, 150 residential units, and a bunch more retail to Wisconsin Ave.

Good to hear, the people who opposed this project were short sighted!

A 6000 square foot Giant? All this fuss just for that?

Actually, you could ask all that fuss for …. just a Giant?

The new Giant will be closer to 60,000 sq. ft., but something like a Trader Joe’s or a Wegman’s would seem a much better fit for the demographics of that area. Alas, Giant owns the property, so there’s no way a competitor would be able to go in there. Still, it’s hard to see how a just a big box store alone is going to wean Cleveland Park and Cathedral Heights off their Whole Foods habit. Unlike Ward 8, the Georgetown to Maryland corridor is not exactly a food desert. There are lot of grocery store options there, so it’s not exactly easy to see where Giant sees its target market as being.

There is more than enough customers in the area to support another grocery store. Specifically if you look west towards Spring Valley – which via Mass Ave and Macomb would have direct access to Giant. This doesn’t event take into consideration the apartments and condo’s (new and existing) urrounding Giant.
