Georgetown Heating Plant Update
5 01 2012Word out of Georgetown is that the RFP process for the government owned West Heating Plant building (pictured below) is going to be very different than most, since basically the building/property is going to be sold to the highest bidder. The Georgetown Metropolitan was at the ANC meeting and it sounds like the process will get started late next summer with an online ebay style bidding process.

Given the approach, we imagine this is going to end up as a hotel or other commercially profitable venture given the economic factors at play here and preference for getting market value for the property. Thoughts?

In addition to the Steam plant itself, don’t forget that there are pipes running from the plant all the way up to the State Dept. and other Federal Buildings in Foggy Bottom.
I’m curious as to what happens to the pipes / tunnels once the plant is torn down.
I agree only a big hotel chain is going to be able to put in the highest market bid… Kinda sad, but not sure I would be any happier with offices or condos… Maybe at least require some public space access that is not blocked off by all the high walls currently around the property?
Agreed that probably the only economically viable option it the building sells at market rates will be some commerical high volume enterprise.
