Render vs Reality: Lincoln Center

19 01 2012

Back in 2009 we got our first look at the design for the Lincoln Center for Education and Leadership planned for across the street from Ford’s Theater, and in only a few short years the rendering has become a reality. This building replaced the gift shop that used to be on the site next to the home where Lincoln passed away after he was shot.

True to the design there really isn’t much difference in how the project ended up looking, though from a massing perspective the thin structure does stick out above its shorter neighbors on either side. What do you think?

Rather creepy to have a two story Lincoln looking across the street at the Theater he was shot in… if you ask me

The proportions of the entry are just different enough… That canopy is a lot chunkier and less elegant than it was in the renderings. You’d think they wouldn’t have value engineered the nice-ness out of the canopy given that it’s the only part of the building you experience at the street level.

Oh well. Hopefully someday this country will appreciate architecture enough to actually spend money on it.
