Great Shots: Across the Potomac

31 08 2010

Another great one from prolific area photo maven MV Jantzen who judging by his flickr account manages to be everywhere capturing shots from all over town each week. This great shot of the setting sun makes us want to go for a long walk along the Potomac… especially now that the new Georgetown Waterfront Park is complete.

Great Shots: Fading Summer

18 08 2010

This shot of Thomas Circle nicely captures a pleasant colorful summer evening in the city. The yellow color of the street and buildings also gives a nice contrast to the setting summer sun. With Fall just around the corner, before you know it these 95 degree days will become a fond memory as we plow through the inevitable snow. Great shot!

Great Shots: Jefferson Sunrise

13 08 2010

Sometimes all it takes is a little sunlight and the right angle to capture the perfect shot. We love how the Capitol dome is framed on the left with the sun just peeking through the Jefferson Memorial. We officially have a new screen saver!

Great Shots: Pennsylvania Ave

25 06 2010

We have spent some time admiring this stretch of Pennsylvania Ave in the past and this great mashup shot gives a great impression of how much things really have changed from the smaller commercial buildings and the old Washington Post HQ on the right in the 1920s, to the massive block long Marriott building there today.

Great Shots: Tilt Shift

1 06 2010

Prolific photographer “Mr T in DC” took this shot south down 8th Street NW towards the National Archives and then used a little “Tilt Shift” effect to make everything look like toy set. The perfectly centered trolley really makes the shot!

Great Shots: Isaac Levy & Son

18 05 2010

Sometimes it’s more about the subject than the shot, in this case the amazing beaux-arts cornice detail makes this a great shot. However, we couldn’t find out much on the history of the building along Seventh street other than that it was built back in 1888, anyone have more detail? We are sure we’re not alone in our interest in its past!

Great Shots: What Remains

13 05 2010

Now that the Bruce Monroe School in Columbia Heights is nothing more than a pile of rubble, all that remains is the memories people have of their time spent there. This great shot of children’s art, combined with the fence and heavy machinery in the background creates a very interesting view of just how the neighborhood feels.

Given the efforts underway to try and rebuild the school, it takes on even more meaning for those in the neighborhood who, just like the photo, are focused on the message on the cards, not the reality of the demolition behind them.

Great Shots: A Splash of Art

3 05 2010

You may have noticed a few colorful changes to the street-scape along New York Ave NW recently. The National Museum of Women in the Arts just finished installing some amazingly colorful sculptures by artist Niki de Saint Phalle. We’re big fans!

This one pictured is called Arbre Serpents, the Serpent Tree.

Great Shots: Iconic Repetition

26 04 2010

This is one of the those photos that could be framed with a nice quote at the bottom don’t you think? We love the scale of the photo and how the Washington Monument lines up with the colonnade.

Great Shots: Window Frame

21 04 2010

If you have been to Columbia Heights recently, there is definitely no way you could have missed all the construction activity going on outside the Tivoli theater along 14th Street. This great shot captures the action from a little different of an angle than we are used to. The windowpanes create a perfect frame for the photo!

Great Shots: H Street

9 04 2010

As work continues along H Street NE, this shot was snapped through the construction barriers of the new streetcar tracks being installed. We love the perspective with the tracks fading into the distance!

Great Shots: Union Station

1 04 2010

Would you have been able to guess where this shot was taken had we not told you? Isn’t it amazing the amount of work and detail that used to go into parts of buildings that are rarely even seen? Now with some buildings, we are lucky to get anything more than precast concrete!

The confluence of perspective and composition makes this a great shot!

GreatShots: Reflection on M

18 03 2010

Some of the greatest photos we have ever seen are a combination of right moment, right lighting. This photo perfectly captures that time in the day when the reflection off windows sends light into new places. The effect almost looks like the light is passing through a building rather than reflecting off the windows!

A nice HDR effect on the finish also gives everything such a shinny polished marble look.  What a great shot!

Great Shots: A Colorful Block

5 03 2010

When we first saw this colorful shot from MV Jantzen in Georgetown, we thought… could this be some new art installation, or cool architectural detail we had never seen before? But alas on closer examination it is just a well framed shot with great lighting of a knockoff purse vendor. So colorful!

Great Shots: A Capitol Reflection

1 03 2010

All the melting snow has been creating a lot of ugly puddles around town, but this one doesn’t look so bad. We have seen this shot done in the past, but never to such great effect! It almost looks painted on doesn’t it? Great Shot!
