Great Shots: A Colorful Block

5 03 2010

When we first saw this colorful shot from MV Jantzen in Georgetown, we thought… could this be some new art installation, or cool architectural detail we had never seen before? But alas on closer examination it is just a well framed shot with great lighting of a knockoff purse vendor. So colorful!

Great Shots: A Capitol Reflection

1 03 2010

All the melting snow has been creating a lot of ugly puddles around town, but this one doesn’t look so bad. We have seen this shot done in the past, but never to such great effect! It almost looks painted on doesn’t it? Great Shot!

Great Shots: More Snow

10 02 2010

Pictures like this make another day of snow almost bearable… almost. This block of row homes in Adams Morgan is often photographed but the clean white snow brightens this rainbow row up even more. This is the definition of a great shot for us, great light and great architecture!

Great Shots: 360 National Mall

8 02 2010

This is certainly an interesting and innovative way to approach the 360 degree shot. You get every single one of the views we love on the National Mall all squeezed into one picture, including the Air and Space, Washington Monument, and the Capitol building. Great Shot!

Great Shots: SNOMG Edition

1 02 2010

While not nearly as paralyzing to the area as the last go around of snow, this weekend saw its share of the white stuff and caused most people to change plans and stay inside. However the weather was not enough to keep area photographers out of the snow. Photog Erin snapped this great shot of a little color amid the white out.

Great Shots: 7th Street Past

27 01 2010

There are not many streets around town where you could take a picture from over 70 years ago and see pretty much the same scene. Along 7th Street NW the structure at the corner of D Street still stands to this day with its incredible facade and arched windows. Back then it was Wines and Whiskies, but now the 1st floor is occupied by Jose Andres’ Oyamel.

It takes a real skill to line up shots like this! [Photo: JasonEPowell]

Great Shots: Meridian Hill

20 01 2010

Malcolm X Park is a great setting for photography and this great shot makes it almost seem like Spring (or Fall) is in the air! Who knew we had our very own Spanish Steps… we like the perspective and the fast shutter speeds effect on the water too!

Great Shots: A DC Morning

11 01 2010

We love how in focus the dome of the Capitol building is in this photo. With the sun rising up in the background backlighting the trees along the National Mall and the temporary structures glowing from inside, it almost makes us forget how cold it is outside.

Great Shots: Art Perspectives

7 01 2010

At the National Gallery of Art, the paintings and sculptures aren’t the only pieces of art. Some might say the moving walkway between the two wings of the museum is more airport than art, but we say it’s all about perspective with interior design. That there is another person in the photo also capturing the view makes it that much greater of a shot!

Great Shots: Building a Sunrise

30 12 2009

There sure have been some amazing sunrises these past couple days, it must be the time of year! This great shot perfectly captures the stunning colors against a great silhouette of all the construction cranes that still are shaping our skyline.

Great Shots: Snowpocalypse 2009

21 12 2009

With the Federal government closed for the day and most construction sites and office buildings closed as well, downtown is feeling like a bit of a ghost town. However the cold sure isn’t keeping area photographers from being out and about… here are a few of our favorite shots.

Great Shots: Capitol Sunset

17 12 2009

Nothing like a little HDR treatment to make a setting sun look even better. We like how bright this photo is even on such a cloudy and overcast day! For a building that’s the subject of millions of photos a year, it’s nice to see it in a new light sometimes.

Great Shots: First Snow

7 12 2009

Well Washington, it seems we managed to survive the first snow. We love this great shot because it perfectly captures the anticipation right before the full onslaught of the snow. Plus we think alleyways are often a truly under appreciated subject of photography.

Great Shots: Night HDR

16 11 2009

The National Museum of the American Indian really doesn’t have a bad angle does it? Originally designed by Douglas Cardinal, this shot perfectly captures the flow of the front facade, and the HDR treatment creates a nice glowing effect on the limestone don’t you think?

Great Shots: A Vertical Reflection

4 11 2009

The headquarters building of the National Association of Realtors designed by Graham Gund and SMB Architects has been the subject of many photographers, but we especially like this one by flickr user Suephi. The building itself has a great reflective property that gives its surrounding neighbors a neat vertical partitioned effect. Great Shot!
