The Interior: 200 Eye Street SE

22 02 2013

How about a peek into the adaptive reuse project at 200 Eye Street? The old windowless newspaper printing facility has gone through a massive renovation into a thoroughly new and modern space. The space has been fitted out for the use of multiple DC governmental agencies and from the look of things, they have some great very non-government looking modern space.

Mike Isabella’s New Restaurant

12 12 2011

People sure have been getting excited ever since it was announced that Chef Mike Isabella was going to be taking over the old Tackle Box space along M Street to open his take on Mexican, and now we have a little better idea of how that’s going to look.

The design team at Streetsense to create a “Day-of-the-Dead” interior, incorporating cemetery gates, tequila crates, reclaimed wood, mismatched furniture, and creative lighting schemes that provide a candlelit glow. Interesting take and one that could very quickly lean towards a fake kitschy vibe, but we must say based on the initial concept sketches we have seen, it is going to a really unique space! The restaurants planned name is going to be Bandolero.

The Interior: With Moshe Safdie

26 11 2011

Our feature The Interior takes you inside the buildings that you have always seen from the outside but never the inside, whether it is an off limits government building, or that amazing residential structure, we will take you on a tour.

A few weeks ago we had a chance to get a tour of the recently complete US Institute of Peace on Constitution Ave NW, and we jumped at the chance to get a peek inside from the visionary STARchitect behind its design Moshe Safdie.

For those not familiar with the Institute (seems like quite a few) its purpose is to act as the country’s global conflict management center to work to prevent, mitigate and resolve international conflicts.

Our tour was lead by the Institutes President Dr. Richard Solomon (below left) and Moshe Safdie (right) and one of the most interesting things that kept coming up was how many people now know about the Institute thanks to their now prominent and unique headquarters building.

Even on the overcast day we walked around the building, there was an abundance of natural light, it was actually very striking to notice that there were no lights on in the space. In fact Safdie said that every work area and office space in the entire building has natural light. Of course the main question we had was about the “interesting” roof…

The Interior: Rincon Bates House

20 07 2011

Our Weekly feature The Interior takes you inside the buildings that you have always seen from the outside but never the inside, whether it is an off limits government building, or that amazing residential structure, we will take you on a tour.

This week a look into a newly renovated row house on Capitol Hill. Studio27 Architecture took your typical turn of the century row home and re-imagining it from the inside out, preserved the 1906 facade while bringing some major contemporary styling to the interiors and back of the house.

The Interior: House of Sweden

6 07 2011

Our Weekly feature The Interior takes you inside the buildings that you have always seen from the outside but never the inside, whether it is an off limits government building, or that amazing residential structure, we will take you on a tour.

This week a look into one of the jewels of the Potomac, the House of Sweden designed by Wingardh Architects. The Embassy opened only five years ago, after stints at M Street and 14th Street, as well as the Watergate Office Building, the riverfront site is one of the largest Swedish legations in the world.

The striking location is appropriate and fitting for one of Americas oldest allies and truly reflects a Swedish ”Ikea like” aesthetic. You would think the building was filled with beautiful easy to assemble furniture, but it turns out it is much nicer than that.

The Interior: Modern Georgetown

13 06 2011

Our new feature The Interior will take you inside the buildings that you have always seen from the outside but never the inside, whether it is an off limits government building, or that amazing residential structure, we will take you on a tour.

For the first installment we take a look at the modern condos at the entrance to the Key bridge in Georgetown. If you have ever crossed the Key Bridge, you have certainly seen these modern town homes rising up over the cliff at the edge of M street. Designed by McInturff Architects, the six residential units were built above two mid-nineteenth century buildings. The modern rooftops peak up over the skyline and we have always wondered what they look like inside…

Check out the interior shots in all their glory after the jump…

NYU-DC’s New Interiors

29 10 2010

Take a peek at the interiors of the new NYU Campus building going up on L Street NW. There is a very sterile feel to the interiors and with all the light trails, it looks like cast members from the movie Tron might feel more at home than college students. We are all for mixing up the idea of how academic spaces should look, and this is certainly one extreme of that idea!

New PNC Place’s Water Wall

1 07 2010

We have been following the progress on the new PNC Place building on 17th St down by the White House for a long time and we finally got a chance to check out the most innovative feature of the green building… the cooling water wall. Designed by Gensler Architects, the “eco lobby” has 12 three-story climate wall mesh panels (pictured on left) which help cool the building.

It is a first of its kind feature in DC commercial architecture and certainly worth checking out if you are in the area.

Then&Now: Room and Board

1 06 2010

The old Taylor Motors building on T Street NW has had all sorts of failed plans over the past few years, but now after months of work, the old 1920s Ford Model T showroom will open on June 14th as American made furniture store Room and Board.

Gensler architects along with Washington-based firm Eric Colbert & Associates, were in charge of work to restore the building along with many of its original details. After being empty since 2008, it’s great to see this building back in use.

To Do: Washington Design Center

26 02 2010

If you haven’t been over to the Washington Design center in SW lately a couple of events over the next two months may just be reason enough to go. First up is an event a la the show Top Design where over 30 WDC showrooms will be transformed to display their finest in outdoor living. Patio furniture and outdoor fabrics will be the center of attention March 22-26…

The event which really caught our attention though is the Find-A-Designer Day event, April 29, 2pm – 6pm. Attendees will get the opportunity to peruse over 60 of the designers showrooms and receive a free 30 minute consultation with a design professionals. The even is free and there will be a cocktail reception, so you know we will be there, what could be better than browsing the latest in interior design while sipping a cocktail?

Great Shots: Art Perspectives

7 01 2010

At the National Gallery of Art, the paintings and sculptures aren’t the only pieces of art. Some might say the moving walkway between the two wings of the museum is more airport than art, but we say it’s all about perspective with interior design. That there is another person in the photo also capturing the view makes it that much greater of a shot!

Inside of New Arent Fox HQ

7 10 2009

Now that work has finally commenced on the new 1000 Connecticut Ave building downtown, we are starting to get an idea of what the building is going to look like on the inside (and from the roof). The exterior design by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners has been getting knocked lately so we are interested to hear what you think of these new renderings.

New CSIS Interiors

22 09 2009

We just got our hands on some interior renderings of the hot new Hickok Cole designed CSIS building that’s going to be built on Rhode Island Ave. NW. The exterior looked great back in the rendering we saw in June and these interiors are looking pretty darn good too. The PUD application is already in and the building is on track for a 2011 completion. What do you think?

Inside 15 K Street

24 07 2009

We got our hands on some of the interior renderings done by ArchiBIM of the new project 15 K Street in NoMa and we have to say they look good. The planned 12 story building between North Capital and First street is being designed by WDG Architects. We are really digging the look of the indoor atrium’s waterfalls.

Water features don’t get the credit they deserve.

All Modern Giveaway Winner!

27 06 2009

Congratulations are in order for Liz whose comment was randomly chosen by Random.org, but whose comment is certainly worth repeating again.

Liz’s must have design item is “The large black & white photos of my family framed in white teak wood hanging in a collage in the living room. The most important design items make a statement about who you are, and what says who you are better than priceless family photos.” Very nice!

Special thanks to Allmodern.com for providing the prize choices (pictured)!
